The Department of Physical and Colloidal Chemistry of Karakalpak State University began its activities in 1990 and was headed by the candidate of chemical sciences Kali Saparniyazov. In 1993-1996 the department was headed by Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor Muratbai Ismailov.

In 2001, the department was reorganized and headed by Ph.D., associate professor Dzhumamuratova Mapruza Sharibaevna. In 2008-2011 The head of the department was Dr. Rustem Tlegenov and in 2012-2017 Candidate of Chemical Sciences Amanbay Pirniyazov. From 2017-2018 the department is headed by Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor Bakhtiyar Nurimbetov. From 2018 to today, the department is headed by Associate Professor Sharipova Ayshagul Ibraimovna. In its history, the department has prepared several dozen bachelors and masters of chemistry. At present, they work in many educational institutions and scientific centers of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Currently, the department has concluded several agreements with research institutes and higher educational institutions. Among them are the Laboratory of Colloid Chemistry of the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Laboratory of Experimental Technology and the Laboratory of Polyphenol of the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry. A.S.Sadykova and Karakalpaksky Research Institute of Natural Sciences, National University of Uzbekistan.

The scientific direction of the department is the study of the properties of natural dispersion systems using water-soluble polymers, the production of building materials, the production of drilling fluids based on bentonites, the colloidal properties of natural polyphenols. A number of scientific achievements in the above-mentioned directions have been achieved, and the results of the research have been published in scientific journals. In 2017 – 2018, under the leadership of the head of the department B.Nurimbetov, a scientific grant of an applied nature was carried out on the theme: “Development of the composition and technology for obtaining insulation materials based on modified vermiculite.” Currently, the department has 5 candidates of sciences and 5 assistants.
